Purpose: In this lab, six different types of soil were created, ranging from 5% NaCl to H2O. This was done to test if blue flax seeds have the ability to germinate and grow in soil consisting of salt, as salt in soil has been shown to be a problem in agriculture.
Results: The results showed that blue flax seeds do not have the ability to grow in soil which contains any percentage of salt. The blue flax seeds only grew in 100% H2O, with only two of the six seeds in the soil growing, and the seeds germinated once they were in sunlight, rather than being without sunlight. Results Discussion: The results of the lab showed blue flax seeds can only grow in soil with H2O, there must not be any percentage of salt in the soil. The results also showed blue flax seeds can only germinate if it has sunlight, a lesson we learned a few days too late. This information is to all gardeners who would like to know how to plant blue flax seeds. Blue flax seeds must be in moist soil and must have sunlight, especially when they are germinating. The information also goes to those studying about soil salinization as this lab has discovered blue flax seeds would not be able to grow if there was soil salinization. The importance of this lab is to reflect the problems that occur with soil salinization and to learn what plant would and would not be suitable when growing in salinized soil. Data: Day 1 of growth: one seed 0.1cm Day 2 of growth: one seed 0.6cm Day 3 of growth: two seeds 0.7cm & 0.3cm Day 4 of growth: two seeds 0.8cm & 0.6cm Day 5 of growth: two seeds 1.1cm & 1.2cm Day 6 of growth: 1.3cm & 1.8cm Procedure:
